80,000 persons were employed in R&D activities in 2010. Over one half of the research personnel worked for business enterprises.

More than one third, 27,000, of all the R&D personnel were women. In the public and higher education sectors, women made up one half of the research personnel, in business enterprises only 20 per cent.
