In 2008, a good 79,000 persons were employed in R&D. Over one half of the research personnel worked for business enterprises.

One third, 27,100, of all the R&D personnel were women. In the public and higher education sectors, women made up one half of the research personnel, in business enterprises only 21 per cent.
